For this week's writing tutorial we will introduce you to writing and reading numbers using Kanji symbols, to help you make up any number from 1 to a billion.

Roku

shichi (nana)

Hachi

kyuu (ku)

Jyuu

Tip: For easy pronunciation, the words in brackets above are often used instead.

To build up the numbers from 11 to 99 it is very easy as they are made from combinations of the numbers 1 to 10 as a logical consequence. For example:

11

17

30

jyuu-ichi

十一

jyuu-shichi (jyuu-nana

)十七

san-jyuu

三十

62

84

95

roku-jyuu-ni

六十二

hachi-jyuu-shi (hachi-jyuu-yon)

八十四

kyuu-jyuu-go

九十五

To help you understand how the above symbols are derived, the following examples demonstrate the basic equations:

  • 10 + 1 = 11
  • 10 + 7 = 17
  • 3 × 10 = 30
  • 6 × 10 + 2 = 62
  • 8 × 10 + 4 = 84
  • 9 × 10 + 5 = 95

There are different symbols for the numbers from 100 to a billion when written in Kanji. For example:

200

501
